An Analysis of Play Themes Shown in the Child-Centered Play Therapy Process of a Child with ADHD

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether child-centered play therapy was an effective method to bring about positive changes in a child suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) and to analyze play therapy based on mainly those play themes as suggested by Ray(2010). Twenty two sessions of child-centered play therapy were carried out on the boy, who was aged five, and had previously been diagnosed with ADHD. The results proved child-centered play therapy to be effective method of treating the symptoms of ADHD. The changes in play themes shown during the sessions can be divided into three stages. Power/Control, Dependency, Revenge, Safety/Security, Chaos/Instability, Anxiety, in the early phase(1-4). Relationship, Power/Control, Revenge, Safety/Security, Mastery, Nurturing, Protection, Reparation, Chaos/Instability, Integration, Self-sufficiency, Resiliency, in the mid phase(5-17). Relationship, Mastery, Nurturing, Protection, Separation, Reparation, Integration, Self-sufficiency, and Resiliency in the later phase(18-22). This study is significant in that it has successfully analyzed and brought to light the play themes and the effects of child-centered play therapy symptoms on a child with ADHD.
